The analysis and identification of organic compounds in a lab is Qualitative analysis of organic compounds. An organic compound usually consists of Carbon, Hydrogen. These compounds may also contain oxygen, halogens, nitrogen, sulphur based on the functional group present. 

We can divide the qualitative analysis into,

Preliminary tests

As the name suggests, these tests act as a base of the analysis. The preliminary tests consist of observing various physical characteristics such as color, odour, state, solubility and the ignition test. These tests help determine the steps to be followed.

Test for Extra Elements

Organic compounds contain other elements such as Halogens, Nitrogen, Sulphur, Oxygen. All the elements mentioned, except Oxygen, are determined by Lassaigne's test.

Testing the presence of a functional group and confirming it with the synthesis of its derivative.

This steps involves testing the presence of a functional group and then confirmed by the synthesis of its derivative.

Basic things about Organic Chemistry I wish someone had told me before!

 Chemistry was initially quite difficult for me to understand. Here are a few basic concepts which when understood perfectly will help. I am assuming you have an idea about some things in chemistry. Bonds Chemical bonds are of four basic types: Ionic bond Covalent bond Hydrogen bond van der Waals interactions  Organic compounds generally contain covalent bonds. Covalent bonds are formed by sharing of electrons so that individual atoms get a stable configuration. It is of two types,  Sigma bond Pi bond Sigma bond is the strongest type of covalent bond which is formed by head on overlap of the atomic orbital. Pi bond is formed by the lateral overlap of the orbitals. This leads to the formation of double and triple bond. The pi bonds are shorter and stronger than sigma bond.

Nomenclature (Simple molecules)- 1

 IUPAC Nomenclature sounds scary, doesn't it? I remember the first time I was taught this concept (in class 10). My teacher was convinced that we wouldn't understand the concept in one go! In all honesty I do not remember how long it took for me to understand the concept but I landed up forgetting it anyway. When I finally understood it, I was in college. This topic constantly kept me wondering about the point of it all but after I did understand organic chemistry started to make a lot of sense ! Not only that, it was fun too. The IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) set the rules for naming the various compounds.
